Isi artikelSpeech signals entering the inner ear are translated from sound pressure vibrations into electrical impulses on the nerve fibers that connect the cochlea to the central nervous system. Responses of these nerve fibers to consonant-vowel syllables, containing both stops and nasal sounds, may be characterized as a three-dimensional encoding of the acoustic stimulus (average rate, discharge synchrony and tonotopic place) which retains many of its temporal and spectral features. Although some phonetically significant features appear to be enhanced in the transformation, there is no evidence of "categorization" at the cochlear level.
