Why did bruce thompson want me to comment on hubbard and ryan's (2000 [this issue]} article ? After all, Iam not a statitician but a sociologist who edits a journal that appeals to both academics and practiitonenrs. However, reding the article stirred up a host of thoughts, some of them stemming from my own experience as much as the contents of the article. Tests of statistical significance have been extremely important in applied quantitative research. They help prevent the acceptance of differences as real that are probably chance.
