Isi artikelAn experiment is reported that investigated the role of semantic context effects on identification of speech. Tokens from speech voicing series (e.g., DENT-TENT) were embedded in sentence contexts semantically biased toward the voiced or voiceless endpoints. Subjects labeled stimuli ill the category boundary region (perceptually ambiguous stimuli) such that a contextually appropriate word was formed. Identification responses to endpoint tokens (perceptually clear stimuli) were not influenced by the context. For perceptually ambiguous stimuli, reaction times for context consistent responses were not faster than context inconsistent responses; at the continua endpoints a reaction time advantage for context consistent responses was found. The reaction time data are discussed in terms of a postperceptual mechanism underlying the demonstrated context effect on identification responses. The postperceptual mechanism supported by the reaction time data contrasts with many current models of context effects in the auditory domain that claim context operates to facilitate initial encoding of the stimulus.
