Isi artikelDuring the war years from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s the urbanization process in North Vietnam was stifled as cities were evacuated to minimize damage from bombing. In contrast, in the South the urban areas grew rapidly as people fled the fighting in the villages. Reunification of the country brought about a shrinking of the largest southern cities, as residents were repatriated or sent to new economic zones.
