Isi artikelNews Headlines is an important part of news because the headline will attract attention of the readers before they read the news. As we know, a lot of people have an interest to read news after they read the headline. Sometimes, the journalists use unique structures or words that can be interpreted in several meanings. This phenomenon is called ambiguity. Through this research, the researcher has purposes to find the causes of ambiguity in news headlines and the impact caused by ambiguous news headlines. The researcher will analyze the ambiguity occurred in news headlines. Furthermore, the researcher will analyze the interpretation of the readers towards the ambiguous news headlines. The news headlines will be taken from three different news portals: CNN, New York Times, and The Washington Post. The headlines which were analyzed here is focused on criminal topics. The researchers focus on the criminal news headline because the researcher found more ambiguity in criminal news than other news topic. Through this research, the researcher would like to identify the factors that cause misinterpretation of the readers towards the news headline. As the result, the researcher found syntactic and lexical ambiguity in readers' interpretation towards some criminal news headlines. The researchers used 2 types of approaches. First, the researcher used syntactic approach. Syntactic approach is used to analyze the news headlines which have structural ambiguity. Second, is semantic approach. Semantic approach is used to analyze the news headlines which have lexical ambiguity. The researcher will use library and qualitative research method to examine the research questions. Library method is used because the researcher takes the data (news headlines) and references from books, journal, news portal, and dictionaries. While qualitative research is used to collect and analyze the data in form of readers’ interpretation towards the news headlines.
