Isi artikelSubjects learned a single list of words by multiple trial free recall to one of three criteria; they were given an immediqae cued recall test on half of the items and a second cued recall test for al items after various intervals ranging from one hour to three weeks. Each items was tested four times ;twice with a rhyme cue and twice with an associate. The effectiveness of the rhyme cue declined over time more rapidly than the effectiveness of the associative cue but only when learning was carried to ahigh criterionand/or items were given an immediate test. Mostof the effect occured within an hour. Several internal analyses revealed changes in the relatinship between the effectiveness of one cue and another.
