Isi artikelRecall of passages was used to determine relative importance of lines according to their function in an argument. Assignment of lines to functional categories was determined by factivity and logical dependence. Findings are that when they occur as steps in an argument, hypothetical assumptions and their logical consequences are less well recalled than facts. And facts introduced as given are better recalled than facts that are conducted in the course of an argument. Surface structure markings of factivity and logical dependence cannot by themselves account for these results.
