Isi artikel
In two experiments 50 subjects judged nine spoken monosyllables or nine pure tones on 15 bipolar-adjective scales. It was found that subjects were in agreement in their assignments and that, generally, high tones and the vowel sound Iii were rated similarly as being active, but not potent; low tones and Ia! were rated potent; low tones and Iu/ were passive. The vowel Iii was judged as "better" than Iu/ and la!, but evaluative scales were inconsistent across tone frequencies. It is postulated that frequency may be an important meaningbearing component and that formant frequencies of vowels may be critical in the phonetic symbolism phenomenon.
