With the recent focus in applied linguistics on lexical competence, and the impact this has had on language teaching, many language teachers are now aware of the necessity of making vocabulary a central part of their teaching practice. This paper looks at how vocabulary notebooks have been introduced into a secondary school language programme in Thailand as a means of increasing the learners' lexical competence, and assisting them in the development of autonomous modes of learning. Possible outcomes are considered, particularly in terms of the development of the study skills and cognitive strategies necessary for independent learning.
