This paper reflects on the evolution of the professional careers of teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), specifically focusing on the difficulties experienced by native-speaker teachers when they move from a period of teacher education into the private sector workplace. The paper suggests that positive teacher development does not always take place after a period of teacher education because of the tension which exists between the culture of the training centre and the culture of the workplace. A number of ways are suggested in which teacher education courses can prepare trainees for their place of work. Teacher education is considered at both pre-service and in-service levels. The issues examined reflect the author's personal experience, and focus specifically on native-speaker teachers working in commercial schools. However, they may well also be relevant in other teaching contexts.
