Previos works shows that when individuals construct an ordering (e.g., ABC) from pairwise relationships (e.G., AB and BC ), congruent sentences are processed quicker and easier than incongruent sentences. The present work indicates that the source of this congruent-incongruent difference is in the search of memory for information matching the new input rather than in the actual integration of new with old information. In two experiments no support for an integration hypothesis was found. The search hypothesis was supported by by evidence which indicates that eliminating the need to search eliminates the congruent - in- congruent difference. and that increasing the number of items to be searched increases the congruent difference, and that increasing the number of items to be search hypothesis for other tasks demanding the integration of new with old information is discussed.
