French creole, otherwise known as Kweyol, is spoken by a small but significant number of settlers in the UK from the Eastern Caribbean islands of St Lucia and Dominica. This paper describes how the development of a criterion referenced test for Kweyol, a language with a very recent history of writing, led to, the accreditation of Kweyol language and literacy courses taught in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets since 1984. The process of accreditation, however, has implications far beyond this particular speech community. It has relevance, for instance, for those involved in other community (or heritage language) teaching in countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia. It is also of interest to those committed to sustaining local literacies in micro-states such as the Seychelles, or in multilingual states in Africa and India.
