Isi artikelAdolescent friendship relations are generally portrayed as particularly intimate and influential, as autonomy from the family is negotiated. This normative portrait has been developed largely through research on white adolescents. The few existing studies of black adolescent social relations have ,relied primarily on small samples of inner-city youth and have led to the development of a compensation argument: Black youths are believed to be even more peer oriented than their white counterparts because of (presumed) family deficits. This study develops conception of black adolescent social relations which contrasts sharply with the compensation argument. We hypothesize that black youths maintain a more intimate stance toward family during adolescence, while friendship relations are characterized by a lower level of intensity. Further, we argue that black in contrast to white adolescents perceive significantly lower levels of peer pressure, and appear more tolerant of behavioral differences in their friendships. Data based on personal interviews with a sample of 942 adolescents are presented which lend support to this alternative portrait. These results suggest the importance of taking race/ethnicity into account in building theories of adolescent development, and in understanding how social networks influence important outcomes such as academic achievement and delinquency involvement.
