A unit from an English Studies programme at the University of Bielefeld is analysed and commented on. The topic, Colonialism and Slavery in the British Empire, was presented to students using a wide range of materials, including songs, illustrations, literature, and social history. The objective was to help the students, future teachers of English, to use the target language as a means of access to the wide range of cultures and societies all over the world that it has affected. This should encourage them to reflect on their own language and culture also.
