This study examines how both the division of household labor and perceptions of its equity related to spouses' reports of marital conflict and , satisfaction in working-class and middle-class ,dual-earner families. Using data from the 1988 National Survey of Families and Households, 655 dual-earner couples were categorized into four groups .) both spouses middle class, 2) both , > - spouses working class, 3) husband working class/wife middle class, (!rid 4) husband middle It class/wife working class. Separate analyses conducted by group revealed that for middle-class wives, perceptions of equity had the strongest effect on marital conflict In contrast, for working class wives perceptions of equity were less important rather the higher the proportion of traditinally female tasks these wives performed the ways in which. the division of labor, perceptions of its equity, and evaluations of the marriage relate to one another.
