Approaches, concepts and problems in the evaluation of second and foreign language education are reviewed. The review examines current instruments, methods and procedures of evaluation ar.d identifies five main needs: (1) critical analysis and development of evaluat!on approaches, (2) preparation for responsible evaluation by teachers and administrators, (3) a clear view of evaluation in the micro and macro contexts, (4) a developmental perspective 'on evaluation, and (5) improved teacher education. Each of these areas is explored, using the available literature, and fifteen recommendations are presented for the improvement of faculty evaluation.
