Isi artikelRegister is defined as the formal compared with the intimate dimension of language variation that is functionally determined. Guidelines are suggested for the study of register in Modern Irish, given the extensive literature on language variation and the shortcomings of existing collections of spoken Irish for the study of register. Several correlates of the formal/intimate distinction are presented for further study: syntactic reduction, use of older forms, borrowing from English, the influence of written on spoken forms, and borrowing between dialects of Irish. The study of register in minority languages generally is discussed.
