This research draws upon cybernetic theory to explain the level of control over others in dating relationships. It is argued that individuals act to increase their level of control over the situation has been threatened or disturbed by others either because of high conflict or a lack of perspective taking. Acting to control others contract the effects of these disruptions so that a desired level of control over the situation is maintained. The thesis is tested on a national probability sample of individuals who date. The results are consistent with the premise.
