Social support ussualy flows between intimates such as spouses, parents, and children. Unmarried, dependent populations, however, ussually do not have the possibility of obtaining this support after their parents die. This article test the hypothesis, derived from the serial model of social support, that adult siblings will provide more support to their seriously mentally ill brothers and sisters when parents are not available. Data stem from intervies wih 108 siblings of seriouslly mentally ill participants in a community treatment program. In support of the serial model, siblings provide more contacts, intimacy, and help when teir parents are not livings can in part replace parental caretakers as providers of social support to the seriously mentally ill.
