This study is based on screening and in depth interview with each of 114 grandparents who provide daliy care to their grandchildren. Three categories of caregivers emerge from the data : Grand parents whose grandchildren live with them and whit whom they have legal relationships, grandparents whose grandchildren live with them but whit whom they provide day care. Questions about the impact of providing care the caregivers lives reveal effects in four categories : Changes in lifestyle, changes in relationship with friends, changes in relationship with family, and change in relationship with spouse. These effects differ according to the type of care provided.
