Isi artikel
This article distinguishes between concepts of household and family, and explores generalized exchange between households within extended families. Conceptions of essential structural differences between generalized and dyadic exchange are adapted from Levi-Strauss to evaluate implications of exchange within these extended family networks. Qualitative and quantative data from three highland Philippine communities are presented to illustrate these conceptions, and to demonstrate .he interaction of lateral and intergenerational exchange within extended families. Cooperation, diversification of economic endeavor, fosterage, and family size are all pertinent to generalized exchange. Examples are offered of the application of this perspective to examination of low-income families in the United States, especially in meeting the needs of dependent elderly and female-headed households, and to issues of family planning and economic: development internationality.
