Abstract
Adolescents are part of young generations. They are responsible for the persistence and the development of the people and the nation in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to cultivate these adolescents, so they realize their responsibility to bring the people and the nation for better life. To achieve better life, adolescents need to have achievement motivation
Achievement motivation can be defined as a personal drive manifested as a striving for success, or for better results (McCielland, 1987 and Atkinson, 1978)). It has four characteristics include: responsible toward tasks, able to consider risks, able to take and receive feed back, and creative and inovative. Achievement motivation is determined by comparing individual's behavior with certain standard of excelence. This standard of excelence is subjective, depend on individual understanding on his/her ability. The feeling of "able" is the root of achievement motivation which can be explained through the self-concept.
Self concept can be defined as personal understanding toward oneself including his/her potential ability (Fitts, 1971). There are four aspects of self-concept: self criticism, self-respect, self-integrity, and self-confidence. Theoritically, self-concept has been steadily-formed on late adolescents.
This study aimed to determine the relationship between self concept and achievement motivation. Furthermore, it also attempted to get the description of self concept and achievement motivation on late adolescents. Two hundred and eighteen students attending ten colleges and universities in South Jakarta participated in this study. They were between 17 and 24 years old. They were selected through a probability sampling method using the two stages cluster sampling technique. Self concept was measured using the Tennessee Self Concept Scale, a scale developed by William H. Fitts (1971) to measure self concept; While achievement motivation was measured using a questionnaire developed by the researchers based on the McClelland's theory (1987). The coefficient reliability for the self concept and for the achievement motivation was .9215 and .7856 respectively. Upon completing the questionnaire, participants were interviewed by a trained-researchers. Data were analyzed statistically using a computerized program called SPSS/PC+ to calculate the mean, analysis of variance, t-test, and multiple regression.
Results showed there is a positive and significant relationship between self concept and achievement motivation on late adolescents in DKI Jakarta (r = .6569; l.o.s =.001). Self-respect, one aspect in the self concept, gave a highest contribution to the relationship between self concept and achievement motivation. Generally, the achievement motivation on late adolescent in DKI Jakarta is moderate, with the creativity and innovative as the dominant aspects in the formation of achievement motivation. Accordingly, the self concept on late adolescents in DKI Jakarta also on moderate positive level. The survey indicated that late adolescents in DKI Jakarta rate their self respect and self integrity as high; while, their self confidence rated as moderate. Additionally, they don't have fully-comprehend of their weaknesses and don't have fully-capable to receive feed back from others.
Future research should be directed to explore the role of family, especially the role of parents, in encouraging and developing self concept and achievement motivation on late adolescent.
As a suggestion, programs aim to develop the adolescents mental characters need to be directed into developing of positive self concept in order to elevate the standard of excellence gradually. Some programs suggested include: "pelatihan pengembangan diri" (Self Development Training), "Achievement Motivation Training", and "Bimbingan Karir" (Career guidance).
