The paper presents the results of a study on the use of indirect quotations (KTL) and direct quotations (KL) found in the reports about the bomb blast at JW Marriott Hotel that were published by Kompas. It aims at (1) identifying the proportions of direct speech quotations and indirect speech quotations in the news, (2) describing the mentioning of the sources of the direct and indirect quotations, and (3) identifying the proportions of indirect speech quotations which are immediately followed by direct quotations. The results show that (l) in most of the news reports, the proportions of indirect quotations exceed those of the indirect quotations, (2) in many of the reports, clear identities of the sources are provided, while in some others only vague identities of the sources are mentioned, (3) the indirect quotations and the direct quotations are presented in the following patterns: KTL-KL, KTL, KTL-KTL, KL, in descending order of proportions. Some possible factors that may have caused the patterns above include the influence of deadline and intertextuality, the intention to maintain the newness of the reports, to protect the sources, and to maintain the credibility of the news.
