This paper questions a number of fundamental hypotheses in historical linguistics and dialectology, namely, that language change is constant, that it is gradual, occurring over hundreds of years, and that the basic vocabulary of languages is especially impervious to change. The paper reports a dialectology survey of regional languages in the Bekasi area. Two separate studies, using exactly the same methodology but performed twenty years apart, in 1978 and 1998, provide hard data on language change. The results show that language change occurs in periods as short as twenty years, that the rate of change is not constant, and that even the basic words undergo change.
