Isi artikel
This paper is an attempt to account for the passive construction in Javanese. The analysis is couched within the theoretical framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar. The aim of this paper is to describe (a) the characteristics of the passive constructions, (b) the mechanisms of passivisation, and (c) the mapping of the passives. The result of the analysis shows that passive constructions in Javanese bear universal and specific characteristics. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of passivisation take place in three categories. According to the lexical mapping theory, passives in Javanese can be mapped into three models: (i) the highest theta role of the verb designated [+r] property, (ii) the highest theta role suppressed, (iii) the highest theta role of the verb having two alternations: [+r] or suppressed. Mapping of the ditransitive verbs shows that the Javanese language can be classified into asymmetrical object since only beneficiaries can get [-r], while themes cannot.
