Isi artikelThe fact that English is one of the most important international languages for communication has been admitted by the Indonesian government since its independence; therefore, the government has recommended that English become a compulsory subject in secondary schools. The aim of the teaching of English in the schools has been to develop the students' communicative competence that would would help the students in their university education. Several steps, such as improving English curricula, applying appropriate methods of teaching, and developing academic qualifications of English teachers have been taken to make the teaching of English successful. However, the aim has never been satisfactorily achieved. Several variables are supposed to affect such phenomenon. In this paper, I try to identify and map out those variables.
