The recent discourses among scholars, researchers, and educators in the area of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages reveal a thought-provoking ambivalence pertaining to the role of English in many parts of the world. English has become the language of the elite in many developing countries and tends to perpetuate the social stratification in the community. The study of English has also been viewed as a form of cultural and linguistic imperialism of the West. Within this context, several issues have emerged in the English curriculum design and implementation, namely the impact of globalization, the diversity of the classrooms, the need to balance the diversity and universality, and the psychosocial context of the learners. The paper examines the study of English as a foreign or second language in multicultural societies, particularly in Indonesia in the context of its becoming a truly global language. The discussion will focus on the role of English in transforming socio-cultural identities and the implications on the design and. implementation of the English curriculum.
