The article describes the phonological aspects of Indonesian syllables based on the Optimality Theory. Introduced for the fIrst time by Prince and Smolensky in 1993, the theory reformulates the gram-matical constraints in such a way that linguistic phenomena that were hard to explain can now be handled with ease. The discussion in this article includes the process of identifIcation of the structural constraints to reveal the hierarchy and the specifIc patterns of the Indonesian basic syllables.
