Three traditional tales for pre-school children, Timun Mas, Bawang and Kesuna, and Si Bungsu Katak, are analyzed. A pragmatic analysis reveals that the stories succeed in being informative and communicative. Ho~ever, the discoursal approach they take can be faulted because they do too little to draw the child into the story. They are reminiscent of the kind of monologues one would expect from a grandparent telling a tale or a dalang holding forth. This feature of the tales in likely to make them less appealing to young children or less easy to relate to.
