The article is to investigate the social and cultural norms of the Minangkabau society especially in terms of Austin's behavitive speech act to express apology. Apologetic statements vary from one society to another in their forms, ways, and strategies. A small scale research has been conducted to find out what speech act forms are used by the Minangkabau people when they express their apologies. The theoretical frame of reference used is that of Austin's (1962).
