The paper deals with the Proto-Malayic *i and *u found in Minang kabau dialects. Using data from the informants coming from 4~ different locations in West Sumatera, the author found that the Proto Malayic reflex *i and *u in Minangkabau dialects, besides bein! inherited directly from the Proto-Malayic, became also diphthongize( when they were in the environment of high vowels followed b] certain consonants at the end of a word. The diphthongization variei from one region to another with the Muara Sungai Lolo being the most and the Koto Baru the least diphthongized
