This study evaluates a conceptual model which hypothesized that two dimensions of work-family interference, structural role difficulties and negative mood spillover, intervene in the direct relationship between discrete characteristics of work and marital quality. Using a sample of 334 male and 189 female married white-collar workers, multiple regression analyses indicated that job characteristics predicted dimensions of work family interference which, In turn, predicted marital quality. Some support was provided for the hypothesis that work-family interference mediated the relationships between job characteristics and marital quality.
