The article proposes a theory of grammar relating synta)OlI1tax, discourse semantics, and intonational prosody. The full range of En#nglish intonational tunes distinguished by Beckman and Pierrehumbertr1bert (1986) and their semantic interpretation in terms of focus and informllIDrmation structure are discussed, including "discontinuous" themes and njind rhemes. The theory extends an earlier account based on Combinatory.1Iory Categorial Grammar, which directly pairs phonological and logical fO)'im forms without intermediary representational levels.
