Isi artikel
This is the first of two survey articles on contextual inference and pragmatic explanation and their potential relevance to language learning and teaching. The particular focus of this article is the Cooperative Principle. The accompanying article will focus upon the Politeness Principle (Turner forthcoming). More specific literature on the character of pragmatic analysis can be found in Haberland and Mey (1977), Gazdar (1979, 1980), Dascal (1983), Levinson (1983), Leech (1983), Horn (1988), Kempson (1988), Green (1989), Blakemore (1992), Mey (1993, 1993a, 1994), de Mey (1994), Grundy (1995) and especially Thomas (forthcoming). Davis (1991) and Harnish (1994) are convenient collections of many of the canonical texts. Some cross-linguistic applications can be found in Oleksy (1989), Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper (1989) and Kasper and Blum-Kulka (1993).
