Isi artikelThis present research is a qualitative research that aims at determining the rules of formation of passive construction in Manado Malay and at identifying relation between thematic roles and grammatical relations in passive by concentrating on subject and object position. The analysis is done by focusing on possible thematic grid that is related to the verb in forming passive and finding which thematic roles are possible to be foregrounded to subject position and which ones might be backgrounded, away from subject. Data was collected data by recording and interviewing four native speakers of Manado Malay. Findings show that passive in Manado Malay has its own characteristics, different from commonly used form of passive in English and Indonesian. It is formed by foregrounding object becomes subject PATIENT and backgrounding subject becomes subject AGENT. There is no object in passive construction because both nouns preceed verb. Verb does not undergo any changes but it is usually preceeded by particle ada/da, dapa, so, and mo. Furthermore, the rules of passive construction in Manado Malay allow the foregrounding of roles other than PATIENT, that is, THEME whether it appear in sentence containing transtive or ditransitive verb. On the other hand, RECIPIENT and SOURCE which appear in ditransitive sentence are not possible to be foregrounded to subject of passive. STIMULUS can be the subject of passive when the verb is related to sense perceptions but when it is related to mental and emotional states, the stimulus can not be the subject of passive. The final role that can be foregrounded to subject in passive is EXPERIENCER. It is clearly seen that when constructing passive sentence, by doing alternation of subject and object position, some qualifications are needed to be considered. They are partly grammatical, partly semantic, and partly due to the speaker’s choice point of view.
