As a local language grown in Minangkabaunese culture, there are certain things believed to be not appropriate publicly spoken in communication,whichis known as ‘taboo’. This study aims to investigate the types of taboo words found in Minangkabaunese along with the change of meaning occurring by the use of euphemisms as a way of avoiding the taboo words directly spoken in public occasions. In conducting the research, descriptive-qualitative method was employed. The data were gathered through interview several native speakers of Minangkabaunese whose ages are approximately 45 to 58 years old. They were asked about things which are usually avoided or prohibited to be mentioned or spoken publicly and what words they use to replace them. As a guide in doing the interview, the researcher also used instruments in the form of the lists of words related taboo subjects such as animals, private parts of body, bodily excretion, and some other words and asked the informants how they usually express those words in the public. After collecting the data, the taboo words were classified based on psychological motivation suggested by Parera (2004). The results show that there are three categories of taboo words: taboo of fear, taboo of delicacy, and taboo of propriety. Taboo words are related to various things in life in which the meaning is associated with the belief in Minangkabaunese society.
