Isi artikelThere are some difficulties to express English fricative sounds, especially for Balinese people, as Balinese language does not have any fricative sounds. At the seashore of southern Bali live many local surfers who speak English fluently everyday with the foreigners. This research is mainly aimed at finding types of errors in pronouncing the fricative sounds: / f /, / v /, / ? /, / ð /, / s /, / z /, / ? / and /3 /. The surfers’ errors in pronouncing the fricative sounds become the major problem to be overcame. The data was collected by using observational method by recording and with a questionnaire technique. In this research, all of the respondents are Balinese surfers who live in southern part of Bali (Uluwatu Beach Area). The samples taken are 50 % from the population with the random sampling technique. In addition, the choice is made on the priority based on the frequency of the conversation done by the respondent to the foreigners. Consequently, the analysis is made in a quantitative and qualitative way. The total results should have been applied with the theories. From the findings, it can be found the factors that are affecting the mastery of fricative sounds for Balinese surfers. Some variables were involved in the questionnaire such as educational background, age and the speaking frequency with foreigners in order to analyze the factors determining the mastery of Balinese surfers in pronouncing fricative sound. The important point in this research is found that the school degree or educational background is not guarantee in order to pronounce the fricatives accurately. On the other hand, the speaking frequencies with the foreigner surfers influence the articulating capability of the locals. As far as the fricative sounds are concerned all the results of the research are divided discretely.
