People are using verbal or spoken language more frequently in every day life to communicate with others. It is because communicate with verbal language has its several advantages which compared with other types of language. According to Syamsuddin (1992) the excess of using verbal language are due to the quality of spontaneity and efficient in which it can be adapted to the conditions being faced by speakers. It is the ability in clarifying the understanding of the language used. In verbal language there are varieties of techniques including the use of politeness or modesty in speaking as a measure of a person's culture with a choice of language that he or she uses by looking at the language level of politeness (Coulmas: 84). Based on the background above, this study aims to describe 1) How to express a grateful speech in relation with the level of politeness in Japanese? 2) How do people address or refer others in relation with the level of politeness in Japanese? 3) What is the level of politeness in Japanese? This study uses qualitative descriptive method. The data source is used from recording taken from native conversations with their relations. Data collection techniques with 1).Observations where the event occurred acts of politeness language 2). Record, that record all conversations conducted by native 3). check and note the data source and doing registration against the relevant data on the basis of the formulation of the problem. There is various kind of Politeness in Japanese. In order to express politeness, it is not only in a form of grateful or gratitude speech but also the way how addressing or referring other people and using Keigo or respectful language. From this mini research, emerging some ideas relating to politeness in Japanese that different with Sonkeigo or politeness from Japan. The Sonkeigo related with Indonesian nature. From this research, the researcher provides suggestions for further research involving Gesture in Japanese.
