The use of request by male and female in British national corpus (a case study of "would you mind...?" sentence)

Politeness is a way to show our respect to the addressee in a conversation, especially when the addressee is someone with different social distance such as gender differences. Male and female have different perspective in measuring politeness. One example to show politeness in sentence is by using request. This article is focusing in one request sentence which is “Would you mind…?” and using British National Corpus (BNC) to collect and analyze the data. This article aims to know the frequency differences data from BNC of male and female in using sentence “Would you mind…?” and to know the context of male and female differences in using sentence “Would you mind…?”. The total result of frequency in using “Would you mind…?” sentence in BNC shows that female result is higher than male result. Female has 50 as a total and male has 40 as a total in using that sentence. The result shows significant differences between male and female and it has a possibility that female are more polite than male. And the way of male applies request also different from female. Male mostly applies sentence “Would you mind…?” in business and leisure context while female only applies it in leisure context. And male apply request sentence with positive politeness but female apply request sentence to satire and to show anger which is a negative politeness.
