Isi artikelThis study explores the cultural awareness of similarities and differences between Indonesian and Japanese students in business communication class through the use of electronic mails and group presentations. The participants of this study are eight (8) Indonesian students of University of Al Azhar Indonesia, Jakarta, enrolling in Japanese language business communication class, and eight (8) Japanese students of Kansai University, Osaka, Japan, enrolling in presentation class. Each group communicated with other cultural party group using electronic mails under certain topics via Edmodo classroom assessment tool and carried out presentation activities using video call internet mode. The result of this study shows distance collaborative learning using technology such as e-mail and video call provides learners experiences of communication in intercultural competence perspective as Liddicoat & Scarino (2013) clarified. Moreover, the participants were aware of similarity between Indonesian and Japanese cultures in the use of e-mails and in the delivery of presentation, namely, on the use of written formal expressions. Yet, the participants were also aware of their differences in writing full name and institution, the use of “etc.” adverb in detail information, and the complexity of written formal expressions due to differences in Indonesian and Japanese culture.
