Conceptual processes of Indonesian visual metaphorical linguistic expressions: a cognitive semantics perspective

Traditional attributions of metaphor are linguistic and rhetorical. Neither does it relate to the way of language speakers conceptualize their lives nor their experiences. In cognitive linguistics, metaphor has a pivotal role to conceptualization. The finding in cognitive linguistics shows that metaphor is inherently embedded in the human minds. It formulates that not only do humans speak but they also think metaphorically. Empirically, this notion is self evident. In the written Indonesian language, it is easy to find the empowerment of visual metaphorical linguistic expressions. It strengthens the notion that humans both speak and write metaphorically. Cognitively, the conceptual processes of cross domain mapping can occur in two ways: (1) a source domain attaches to several target domains; and (2) several source domains attach to a target domain. The present paper attempts to address how a visual metaphorical linguistic expression functioning as a source domain can attach to several target domains, hence it can communicatively deliver the ideas of Indonesians as it appears in the Indonesian mass media. This topic is discussed from the conceptual metaphor theory theorized by Lakoff and Johnson. Linguistic introspection is used as the method to discuss the research data. The intentional concentration of language speaker to certain linguistic unit is referred to by linguistic introspection. The research finds that the empowerment of visual objects as a media to communicate ideas of the Indonesian language speakers is motivated. Conceptually, the processes of cross domain mapping of a visual metaphorical linguistic expression to refer to several target domains happen through these ways: (1) a source domain refers to several target domains because of functional motivation by empowering visual objects having more significant value in comparison with other visual objects in the same system; (2) a source domain refers to several target domains because of characteristics motivation by using visual objects spreading something to something else and by using visual objects from which certain characteristics appear; (3) a source domain attaches to several target domains because of physical size motivation by empowering small visual objects to refer to something small and by empowering big visual objects to refer to big thing; (4) a source domain attaches to several target domains because of mixed motivation of physical form, characteristics, and function by using visual objects that become the most wanted thing in a game. It evidences that the empowerment of visual objects metaphorically is motivated by the primordial nature of the visual objects themselves.
