Isi artikelThis research explores the following questions: 1. How do men or women communicate in an informal communicative event? 2. How do men or women behave in an informal communicative event? The research involved four participants: Howi Amalia (an analyst at Communications and Informatics Ministry); Amanda (a videographer), Dipa Raditya (a project manager) and Dennis Setiawan (a chief operation). Three of them are in the same social group, and one subject is not, but she has the same interest with other subjects (cinephile). All of the subjects are Indonesian who live and work in the capital city, Jakarta. The data was collected through the use of video-recording of a naturally occurring data of a 20’56”- conversation. The researchers pick a general topic of age in relationship for the participants to discuss. The conversation took place in a casual coffee meet-up at Anomali Café, Senopati. As the main goal of this research study was to find out how do men and women communicate in an informal communicative event, thus both quantitative and qualitative method are used in analyzing the result. The qualitative data included respondents’ behaviors which were elicited through observation, while the quantitative data were collected through the transcript of recorded conversation. It can be concluded that most of the participants are more concerned about the performance rather than in gender stereotyping. In this informal communicative event, it must be understood that other factors also influence how men and women use language. The closer distance between speakers, and the less formal an event affect each speaker words amount. What is more, each speaker did interruption not to dominate the floor but to show enthusiasm toward others’ opinion. Also, lifestyles, job, and the frequency of interaction of the opposite gender apparently play a part on the way a speaker use prestige and/or vernacular words. Therefore, the study concluded that in this contextual conversation, gender is not the dominating factor that determined the participants’ linguistic behaviors when interacting with each other.
