A Comparison of Collocates of Nikah and Kawin and Their Derivation

In the Indonesian language, there are two words that refer to the English word for marriage. They are Nikah and Kawin. According to KBBI (2008), Nikah: Ikatan (akad) perkawinan yang dilakukan sesuai dengan ketentuan hukum dan ajaran agama. Meanwhile Kawin: 1. Membentuk keluarga dengan lawan jenis; bersuami atau beristri; menikah, 2. Melakukan hubungan kelamin; berkelamin (untuk hewan). This study tries to compare between the definition given in the dictionary and the actual use of the words. In Indonesia, these two words have derivation that also has the different meaning each other, that are pernikahan and perkawinan, menikahi and mengawini, menikahkan and mengawinkan. The data are taken from the Indonesian Corpus, which is derived from Leipzig corpora. Research question for this study is, what are the most frequent words that collocate the word ‘nikah’ and ‘kawin and their derivation. Quantitative method is used in this study. Based on the data analysis, the results for each word are shown as follow. First, the word nikah collocates this word: akad, siri, KUA, mut’ah, and sah. In the other hand, the collocation words for kawin are: betina, cerai, kontrak, suami and silang. Second, the collocation words for pernikahan are: pesta, siri, perceraian and sah. Meanwhile, the collocation results of the word perkawinan are: poligami, pembatalan, Islam, and campuran. Third, the collocation words for menikahi are: wanita, gadis, perempuan, pria, and janda. On the other hand, the collocation words for mengawini are: betina, wanita, jantan, perempuan and menceraikan. The last, the collocation words for menikahkan are: putrinya, wali, anaknya, penghulu and KUA. In the mean time, the collocation words for mengawinkan are: gelar, juara, anaknya, putri, and putra. From the text above, nikah, also its derivation pernikahan, tend to have meaning of something that official meanwhile the word kawin, also its derivation perkawinan, tend to have meaning of something that will not last for a long time, sometimes it relate to animal sexual activity. For the words menikahi and mengawini have almost similar collocation, it is an activity that mostly done by the man, but there is the word betina in collocation of mengawini, which means that word tend to relate with the animal entity. The last, the words menikahkan and mengawinkan use to express activity that are done for other people, such as the parents do something for their children.
