Using transition devices appropriately to connect ideas in a text can be a serious problem for second language learners. English learners often overuse or misuse these transitions – also referred to as connectors – in their writing. This may include such as the use of adverbials, conjunctions, and prepositional phrases to build up coherence between sentences in the text. This paper reports a preliminary study of Indonesian-speaker students’ use of transitions in the essays they wrote in English. A number of transitions used in a corpus of ten essays written by thirty English Department students are compared to those found in the model English essays in terms of frequencies of occurrence, patterns of variation, and appropriateness of use. The initial findings suggest that there is not enough evidence to claim that ESL students tend to overuse transition devices. The frequency of transitions used in both corpora shows insignificant difference and patterns of misuse are inconsistent. The study outcome is expected to offer insights into how transition devices are deployed in Indonesian ESL student writing and provide empirical data for addressing the students’ difficulties to develop coherent texts.
