Prepositions are function words that are used to grammatically connect some words and indicate relation of words (Mus, 2012, p. 2). Prepositions can be considered as one of the important elements that need to be taught to and to be learnt by the learners of English as second or foreign language. However, the usage of prepositions frequently poses problems for the learners. This notion is supported by Lorincz and Gordon (2012, p. 1) who state that “prepositions are notoriously difficult for English Language Learners to master due to the sheer number of them in the English language and their polysemous nature.” There are different kinds of English prepositions and often, the function of one preposition overlaps with the function of another, which lead to further confusion. In this study, the writer would like to find out the nouns and noun phrases that follow the combination of verb work and preposition in, at, and for and the adverbs that collocate with the work in, work at, and work for. The writer would focus only on nouns that indicate places and form the general view of nouns that follow work in, work at, and work for. To acquire the result, the writer used Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and observe the concordance lines. From the study towards 300 concordance lines for each item of analysis, the writer found that work in is followed with proper names of countries, cities, providences, and places and nouns and noun phrases that indicate wide areas, particular departments in a company and fields of interest, enclosed buildings, and organizations. Work at is followed with nouns and noun phrases that signalize enclosed buildings, specific location that involve proper names, small and specific areas, areas with border, and organizations. Work for is usually followed with nouns and noun phrases that indicate organizations or group and specific organization or location with proper names. Lastly, the study on the adverbs that collocate with all three items of analysis shows that the same adverbs can appear in all three items.
