Isi artikelAs second language learners are exposed to comprehensible input, they employ strategies to help them make connections between linguistic form and meaning. Sometimes the strategies are not optimal in helping them attend to the important linguistic features in the input. Processing instruction is a kind of instruction that is aimed at altering second language learners’ ineffective processing strategies so that they can improve form-meaning connections. The relative effectiveness of processing instruction on learning different language structures in various languages has been researched for more than two decades. One structure that has not been investigated in the processing instruction paradigm is the English hypothetical conditional construction. This structure is internally complex and, as most ELT teachers’ experience could attest, poses great difficulty to EFL and ESL learners alike. This paper reports the impact processing instruction had on Indonesian EFL learners’ acquisition of the English hypothetical conditional construction. The participants that received the instruction in this study were twenty nine grade eleventh students at a secondary school in Jakarta. To investigate the effectiveness of the instruction, an interpretation task and a production task were used in a pretest and posttest design with immediate effect only. The results indicate that processing instruction was successful in improving the learners’ ability to interpret the target structure. Interestingly, they also show that the learners made significant gains in the production task as well in the posttest despite only having input-focused activities in the treatment.
