An idiomatic expression is a word or phrase that people use in a particular situation and its meaning cannot be inferred from the meanings of the word(s) that makes it up. It is a linguistic expression or lexical items representing objects, concepts or phenomena of material life particular to a given culture. One of the most challenging issues in the realm of translation is translating idioms. Among the troublesome factors involved in the process of translation is the transference of form, meaning, style, proverbs, idioms, etc. This similar problem is faced by one of the most popular machine translators, i.e. Google Translate. The present study reviewed the strategies of idiom translation employed by Google Translate and described the idiom translation problems that the machine translator had. Some Indonesian novels were selected as the data sources. The results revealed that (1) there were four strategies used for translating idioms by Google Translate: free translation, equivalent translation, omission, and literal translation, and (2) there were two main problems of the translation by Google Translate. The former was its ability to recognize and interpret an idiom correctly. The latter was the difficulties in rendering various aspects of meaning that an idiom or a fixed expression conveys into the target language. In concluding, the machine translator needs to improve the naturalness and readability of the resulted translation.
