Isi artikelSpeech act of request is an action done through speaking which purpose is to get somebody to do something. In making requests, there are strategies which have to be used to make the expressions more appropriate in specific situations. This paper is intended to explore the request strategies employed by the EFL learners. The data, in the form of responses, were collected using discourse completion task (DCT) including four different kinds of situations affected by the social distance factor and social power factor. The respondents were 40 students from the English Language and Education department of Atma Jaya Catholic University. The data were analyzed using Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP) scheme of request speech act by Blum-Kulka, House & Kasper (1989). The scheme was adapted by Akutsu (2012) in regard to the presented language forms. The study was able to discover the dominancy of social power factor in affecting the use of request strategy.
