Isi artikelExplicitation hypothesis, as formulated by Blum-Kulka, suggests that translations tend to be more explicit than the original texts. This discovery, along with the other translation universal hypotheses such as Toury’s Interference Law and Tirkkonen-Condit’s Unique Item Hypothesis, is important and challenging in translation studies, particularly with the descriptive trend of this field in the last decade. Having been tested for Indo-German language translations in many studies, this concept has rarely been studied for translation involving Indonesian language. This paper aims to prove the validity of explicitation hypothesis in English-Indonesian translations produced by undergraduate students, so as to examine the types of explicitation manifested in the translation and to what extent the translators’ competence influence the tendency of explicitation in their translations. The analysis on the data shows that translations tend to be more explicit both in the level of word and clause, which can be identified from their grammatical aspect, semantic aspect, and pragmatic aspect. Additionally, the comparison between student translations and translations produced by a more experienced and competent translator suggests that the higher the translators’ competence, the more-frequent certain types of explicitation occur.
