Between Tempo and Tempo English seeing media position through translation strategy of translating characteristics of subjective of news feature

Tempo magazine, a magazine which in general reports political and law issues, is also known as the first media in Indonesia which pioneers news written in feature story. That is also in accordance with its motto, ‘enak dibaca dan perlu (interesting to read and must to)’. Borrowing Sumadiria’s term (2005) to call news feature as ‘karangan khas (typical writing)’, thus there are things that make news feature ‘typical’. They are found on the characteristics. In a G-30-S special report entitled ‘Jejak CIA pada Tragedi 1965’, Tempo reports the involvement of CIA and other foreign intelligence agencies in the darkest tragedy in Indonesia in 1965. The involvements are shown through one of the news feature characteristics, which is the characteristic of subjective, based on theories from Goenawan Mohamad (1997) and Williamson (1975). The characteristic of subjective can be seen within sentences that contain probability and assumption, causation, and relative adjectives. In Tempo English, the translation of it which entitled Nothing but The Truth: Shedding New Lights on The Darkness of 1965, found some translation strategies which influence the characteristic of subjective. The influence also makes a different position of Tempo and Tempo English in reporting news. For example, the sentence which at first has the probability and assumption becomes as clear as a fact because a word that contains the meaning of probability and assumption is reduced. Moreover, the objects of reporting are CIA and other foreign intelligence agencies which are also a speaker of target language. In conclusion, this research sees how the translation strategies influence the characteristic of subjective in news feature.
